BEFORE AND DURING THE EVENT, whilst doing their other duties, the event manager and dp committee members attending will:
- Perform Pre-event checklist
- Monitor and remedy exit routes for blockages
- Check that Fire Alarm system Control Panel remains active
- Check safe positioning of audience including wheelchair users /disabled
- Be aware that wheelchair users may need help if an evacuation is necessary
- Ensure at least one event official remains in the foyer to monitor any situations that arise
- Ensure at least one event official remains in the auditorium to monitor any situations that arise
- Be aware of locations of Fire Alarm activation points
- Activate alarm if you become aware of a fire
- Be aware of smoke detector locations and meanings of indicator lights on Fire Alarm Control Panel
- Be aware of Fire Extinguisher locations and of the different types of extinguisher at each point
IF THE FIRE ALARM SOUNDS OR AN ALARM IS RAISED IN ANOTHER WAY:
- EVACUATE The first thing to do is initiate evacuation of the building by instructing everyone to leave immediately and safely via the nearest exit
- ASSIST Direct people in the building to the nearest exit including the front door, which will often be the nearest for cast and backstage
- CHECK Once evacuation is underway, check on the fire alarm system panel to find out where an alarm was triggered and investigate if safe to do so
- PHONE If a fire is found, call Fire Emergency Services if not already done
- ROLLCALL If safe to do so, the Front of House list of audience and the backstage signing in list should be taken to the muster point
- MUSTER Event manager will accompany audience to muster point and try to establish whether anyone might be missing using attendance lists
- EXTINGUISHER Once the evacuation is complete, you may feel you wish to tackle the fire with an extinguisher, but only do so if you are completely sure of your own safety
EVENT RESUMPTION
The conditions under which an event can be resumed following a fire alarm are:
- Fire & Rescue have declared the building safe
- Discuss with event organiser and participants whether event resumption is sensible bearing in mind the time and disruption
